Kona stay guides · Travel tips
Start with the experience you want, then check the calendar for the exact travel year. Kona offers useful local outings throughout the year, while wildlife, festivals and major sports events follow different rhythms. A month can help shape a trip; it cannot guarantee weather, a sighting or an available ticket.
Best for: choosing travel dates and deciding which reservations need priority.
Area: Kona and nearby west-Hawaiʻi outings.
Use: seasonal ideas below, then the dated event list.
Reserve: the home, essential transport and limited-capacity experiences after confirming dates.
Budget: compare the complete stay and ticket costs for your actual dates.

A month-by-month starting point
The table is an editorial planning guide, not a claim that each activity is unique to that month. NOAA describes Hawaiʻi’s humpback season broadly as November–May, with peak months January–March. Actual sightings vary.
| Month | Experience to build around | A practical planning choice |
|---|---|---|
| January | Whale-season viewing and a quiet Kona base. | Choose shore viewing or a suitable operator; protect a weather-flexible day. |
| February | Whale-season outings and a planned group dinner. | Reserve one shared evening while leaving daytime plans adaptable. |
| March | Whale-season options; check the Kona Brewers Festival’s dated announcement. | The announced next festival date is March 13, 2027. Verify tickets and admission conditions. |
| April | A coffee-country morning and a cultural coastal visit. | Check the farm’s current operating days instead of assuming a daily schedule. |
| May | Farm visits and market meals; whale activity may still occur. | Book a wildlife outing for the experience offered, without expecting a sighting. |
| June | Short beach mornings and time at the rental. | Choose the beach by conditions and facilities, then keep lunch and rest nearby. |
| July | A lūʻau or another shared evening. | Check holiday-specific calendars and ticket terms for your actual travel year. |
| August | Chocolate, salt or another guided learning visit. | Schedule one fixed tour and leave the other half of the day open. |
| September | Queen Liliʻuokalani canoe-race season around Labor Day weekend. | Use the organizer’s year-specific schedule; the 2026 edition is now past. |
| October | Check the IRONMAN calendar before planning a town or road day. | The 2026 Kona race date was October 10. Do not carry that date into a later year. |
| November | Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and the broad return of whale season. | For 2026, the festival runs November 6–15; select individual events before booking around them. |
| December | Holiday meals, local cultural outings and whale-season possibilities. | Confirm holiday hours, group dinners and the actual home’s minimum-stay terms. |
Dated events: what is upcoming and what is past

Put one seasonal priority into a balanced week
Choose a festival event, ocean outing or performance as the anchor, then keep the surrounding days flexible. A coffee event can sit beside a local beach morning and time at the house. A sports-event visit benefits from a home-based meal and a day whose route does not depend on crossing an event area.
For a family, keep the main booking within the attention span and physical requirements of the actual participants. A sold-out ticket or unsuitable sea condition should leave you with another good day, not an empty itinerary.
Use weekly schedules as well as annual calendars
A Saturday stay can include Keauhou Farmers Market, whose current schedule is 8am–noon. Coffee-history sites, galleries and plantation tours have their own operating days. Place those visits on the right weekday before adding optional stops.
When several households travel together, write the date and year beside every booking in the shared itinerary. Include check-in time, location, cancellation deadline and the person holding the confirmation. This is especially useful when event websites still show a mixture of last year’s photos and next year’s announcement.
Check the week you will actually be there
- Confirm the event year and exact date with the organizer before paying for travel.
- Read current road, park and ocean notices shortly before the outing.
- Compare accommodation and transport for the whole group on the selected dates; this guide does not provide live rates.
- Keep one local day free to swap with a weather-affected activity.
- Recheck holiday opening hours directly with restaurants, markets and suppliers.

A few questions before you book
Are the months a weather forecast?
No. They combine seasonal context with suggested planning themes. Check the forecast and local conditions for the actual week.
Are the 2026 sporting events still upcoming?
No. The September canoe-race dates and October 10 IRONMAN date are marked as past as of this guide’s October 11, 2026 review.
Can we use a festival’s previous-year dates for next year?
