Kona stay guides · Food & coffee
A good meal plan gives everyone a holiday, including the person who usually shops and cooks. For a week in a Kona vacation home, start with simple breakfasts, one planned dinner and several flexible evenings. Then choose where a chef, a catered meal or pickup genuinely makes the day easier.
Best for: families and groups sharing a kitchen.
Area: your Kona home and the suppliers on your route.
Time: set aside one planning conversation before arrival.
Reserve: chef and catering services ahead; confirm pickup slots on the day.
Budget: compare food, staffing, delivery, equipment, tax, service charges and cleanup.

Choose the format before the menu
| Meal format | Best use | Work your group still owns |
|---|---|---|
| Private chef | One occasion when everyone wants to stay home and sit down together. | Confirm host permission, kitchen access, serving space and what cleanup includes. |
| Prepared catering | A larger shared meal without a full cooking session. | Confirm delivery or collection, serving equipment, reheating and who handles the dishes. |
| Restaurant takeout | A flexible evening after a beach or town outing. | One coordinator collects everyone’s choices and orders from the correct branch. |
| Cooking together | Breakfasts, a picnic or a simple dinner the group enjoys preparing. | Divide shopping, preparation and cleanup; check cookware before buying ingredients. |
Three practical places to begin
Chef Timothy James advertises private dining and catering in Kona, including dinners and daytime meals. Send your date, guest count and preferred style to request a menu and quote. A published service description is a starting point, not a confirmed reservation or endorsement based on a personal visit.
Umekes lists catering separately from its Kona restaurant. Ask which format can serve your rental address, whether food arrives ready to serve, and how dietary requests are handled. Do not assume a restaurant menu and a catering menu have the same portions or ordering deadlines.
Shaka Tacoz has pickup ordering for Captain Cook and Aliʻi Gardens Marketplace. Match the branch to the outing: Captain Cook makes sense for a South Kona day; Aliʻi Gardens can fit a local coastal day. Check the selected branch and collection time before paying.
Use a five-day meal worksheet
| Day | Main meal plan | Assign before leaving the house |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Pickup or a small grocery dinner; breakfast supplies for tomorrow. | Order coordinator and one grocery buyer. |
| Local beach day | Breakfast at home, picnic lunch, simple shared dinner. | Cooler, food containers and two people on cleanup. |
| Booked outing | An early breakfast and a meal near the actual return point. | Someone checks whether the tour already includes food. |
| Celebration evening | A confirmed chef dinner or catered meal. | One supplier contact, kitchen-access time and the final guest count. |
| Last full day | Flexible lunch and a dinner using what remains. | Check the fridge before buying more; set aside travel snacks. |
Ask the host before confirming a chef
Describe the meal as accurately as you would describe the stay: the registered overnight guests, supplier staff, arrival and departure times, and any equipment they want to bring. A dinner does not automatically permit an event, extra visitors, amplified entertainment or a different parking arrangement. Get the relevant house-rule questions resolved before paying a deposit.
- Share a kitchen photo or inventory with the chef: stove, oven, fridge space, work surfaces and serving dishes.
- Confirm how many guests can eat together at the actual table; bedroom count does not establish dining capacity.
- Ask whether the quote includes shopping, travel, servers, tableware, washing up and rubbish removal.
- Provide allergies and dietary needs directly to the supplier, then ask what it can accommodate.
- Keep the supplier’s arrival window clear so the kitchen is ready and somebody can let the team in.
Shop for the next two days first
For a Saturday start, Keauhou Farmers Market is a useful produce stop: its official schedule is Saturday, 8am–noon, at Keauhou Shopping Center. Choose fruit, vegetables and a few products your group will use, then buy pantry basics separately. Keep chilled items on a short route back to the fridge.
A practical first basket includes breakfast food, drinking water, familiar snacks and ingredients for one easy dinner. Leave space for meals out and the products you discover during the trip. Assign a cleanup pair each evening so the same person does not finish every day in the kitchen.
Find a home that fits this plan
Spacious Kona Retreat
The listing includes a large group kitchen and a game room, useful when dinner and a relaxed evening at home belong together.
Hōlualoa Hilltop Home
The listing’s large dining lanai is worth comparing if shared meals and ocean-view evenings are a priority. Confirm the table setup for your group.
Home features are based on the individual Airbnb listings. Check the current guest limit, sleeping arrangements, rules and full price for your dates. Public map positions are approximate. Activity and meal suppliers are independent bookings.
A few questions before you book
Is a private chef included with the home?
No chef service is included or promised by this guide. Arrange and pay the supplier separately, after checking the home’s rules.
Is catering always cheaper than a chef?
Compare complete quotes for the same guest count and service. Delivery, staffing, rentals and cleanup can change the result.
Should we plan every meal before flying?
Book the meals that need a supplier or a particular group arrangement. Keep ordinary meals flexible around appetite, route and leftovers.
Keep planning your Kona stay
